Carter Observatory, Wellington
The new Carter Observatory, which opened in early 2010, tells the story of the Universe from a New Zealand perspective—astronomy with a distinct Southern Hemisphere twist! From the Big Bang to the Big Crunch, visitors learn about the star paths that guided Maori to Aotearoa to New Zealand’s part in the search for life in outer space.
On September 6th, 2011, we completed two galleries as a part of a second phase of the Carter project. These were a children’s area—the Tuhura Module— and the Pickering gallery dedicated to space technology. A new AV telling the story of Maui taming the Sun and its relevance to Maori star lore was also produced for the theatre.
