The Project

Wellington’s upgraded Carter Observatory opened in early 2010. Its exhibition tells the story of the cosmos from a New Zealand perspective: “The Universe – from Here!”

The narrative takes the visitor from the Big Bang to the Big Crunch. Along the way visitors discover the star paths that guided the ancestors of Māori to Aotearoa, meet some of our homegrown heroes of astronomy, and learn about New Zealand’s part in the search for life in outer space.
In 2011, Story Inc completed the second phase of the Carter project, including an interactive children’s area themed as a space station, a gallery dedicated to space technology, and new film content.
